What the number actually says
LSI measures whether your water wants to dissolve calcium or deposit it. Negative and it is hungry, eating calcium out of whatever it can find: plaster, grout, the tile line. Positive and it drops scale on surfaces, salt cells, and heaters. It comes out of pH, temperature, calcium hardness, alkalinity, and TDS, and pH moves it fastest. Chasing chlorine while ignoring pH is how a pool that looks fine still gets damaged. Most people hold it between about -0.3 and +0.3.
The correction most calculators skip
Here is the trap. Your kit reports total alkalinity, but in a stabilized pool part of that is cyanurate alkalinity from your CYA, which does not buffer calcium the way carbonate does. Feed total alkalinity into an LSI formula on a high-CYA pool and the number comes out rosier than the water you are standing in. If nobody measured CYA, it corrects nothing, because a correction built on a guess is just a nicer-looking wrong answer.
When it actually matters
Care most where fresh plaster meets hungry water. That is etching happening on your watch. Care about heaters and salt cells, where positive LSI lays down scale that costs efficiency first and a part later. Care in the cold, since temperature is in the formula and water turns aggressive as it drops. A steady vinyl stop matters less week to week. Do not let a number invent work.
